A New Vicar for Gatley

It is with great pleasure that we can announce the appointment of Rev Jack Marsh as interim vicar of St James, Gatley from October this year.

Jack is a curate at Holy Trinity Platt in Manchester Diocese and will continue to live in the Manchester curate’s house until the vicarage becomes free.

Jack will be licensed by Bishop Mark, the Bishop of Chester, at 7.00pm on Tuesday 14th October (SAVE THE DATE) and will initially be here for three days a week and three days a week back in Manchester Diocese, serving out his curacy.

On 1st January 2026, the post will become full-time, initially for a three-year period, in the hope that the church will grow and become self-supporting.
Jack is married and has three children.
We believe that God has called them as a family to St James, Gatley, and we are trusting God for his provision for the long term, in ministry with us.

A message from Rev Jack Marsh

Hello everyone,

I wanted to send a message to say how excited we all are about coming to be a part of the St James Church family from the autumn.

I'm so thankful to God for bringing it about, and to all of you for being willing to have us!

Anna and I are praying for all of you and can't wait to properly meet you. We're really looking forward to getting to know and love, worship with, and serve alongside you all.

As for the children, Isabel is looking forward to trying all the cafes and John is looking forward to trying all the playgrounds!
Please pray for us too as we look towards the autumn - as we trust that God will bring everything together in his good time.

Every blessing,
Jack

Remembrance Reflection

Remembrance Reflection   By Rev. Phil Burrows   Many of you will know that I served in the Regular Army before offering for ordination as a vicar in the Church of England.  20 years later that led me to join the Army as a chaplain – no experience in life is ever wasted!  As a result, Remembrance Sunday holds particular significance for me. I would love you to join us for our 10.00am Holy Communion Service on 10 th   November, or at least for the Act of Remembrance on Gatley Green, gathering at 10.45am.     In 2017 I had the privilege of conducting a re-dedication and a re-burial in Ypres, known as ‘Wipers’ to the Tommies fighting in the First World War.  Such was the scale of loss in the fighting and so horrendous were the conditions of mud and swamp as a result of continuous shelling, that human remains are still surfacing from the land over 100 years later!   I was impressed by the work of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. ...

Parish Update

When are we going to get a new vicar at Gatley? We are pleased to announce that we have a candidate who will be interviewed on Thursday 5th June, by representatives from our Parochial Church Council (PCC), the Bishop of Stockport, our patron who is the vicar of Stockport and the Archdeacon of Macclesfield.

80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (VE Day) on 8th May 2025

Rev Phil writes Thursday 8 May 2025 marks 80 years since VE (Victory in Europe) Day.  This year, the nation will unite to remember the end of the Second World War in Europe *.   Around the country, events will take place to pay tribute to those involved in that conflict, as well as reminding us to pray and work for peace in our communities and in the world.   At 6.15pm at St James, Gatley, there will be a short service of prayers for peace and for all who serve in our Armed Forces today.  At 6.30pm the bells will be sounded along with churches and cathedrals around the nation as they let their bells ring out - an opportunity to reflect and give thanks for the peace that so many sacrificed their lives for during the Second World War. As an Army chaplain, I offered a copy of the New Testament and Psalms to every soldier in my battalion before we deployed to Afghanistan.  This maintained a long tradition for soldiers going off to war - dur...
